Information regarding the upcoming Topanga Safety Week (May 2 – May 6) and Evacuation Exercise (May 7) has been mailed to all residents in Topanga. Look for this information to arrive in your mailbox early next week.

Topanga CERT

The Topanga CERT Team is made up of Topanga residents of all ages and backgrounds. Volunteers have completed special training in disaster preparedness and response, including multi-casualty triage, first aid, light search and rescue, fire suppression, and disaster psychology.

Topanga CERT serves Topanga Canyon as emergency first responders by providing support to Los Angeles County Sheriff and Los Angeles County Fire personnel during and after major disasters such as wildfires, earthquakes, and floods. The team also helps to educate the public on emergency preparedness.

“Like” the Topanga CERT Facebook page to get a steady (but not intrusive) stream of emergency preparedness tips and resources in your Facebook newsfeed. This Facebook page also provides updates regarding the Topanga Emergency Management Plan and Survival Guide information important to the Topanga community.

SNAP (Specific Needs Awareness Planning)

The Los Angeles County Operational Area’s SNAP Program is a voluntary disaster registry that can help emergency personnel find people who may need additional assistance in a disaster.

Do you have a permanent or temporary disability?
Do you need help to get out of your home safely during a disaster?
Do you need assistance to travel to an emergency evacuation center?
Do you need extra help taking care of yourself in your home or at an evacuation center?
Do you need extra help because of your disability to care for yourself alone for several days?
Do you need assistive equipment that uses electricity?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should consider registering with SNAP. Information submitted to SNAP is secure and is accessible only to authorized emergency personnel during a disaster. Please note that SNAP does NOT guarantee priority service to those who register, but it does give emergency responders an additional tool to identify, locate, and assist people with disabilities or health conditions during a natural or man-made disaster.

Alert LA Mass Notification System

Please note that this information must be added by the resident. We are unable to do this on your behalf. NSA 4-1 on Santa Maria Road

In the recent mailing that went out to Topanga residents regarding the upcoming Topanga Evacuation Exercise on May 1, we regret that an error occurred on the list of Community Safety Areas (CSAs) and Neighborhood Survival Areas (NSAs) to be activated during this exercise (salmon colored sheet you received).

The list you received indicates that NSA 4-1 is located at 3150 Santa Maria Road. This is incorrect. Although this was the original location for the NSA in that area, the location has changed. The new location for NSA 4-1 is Fair Hills Farm, located at 2735 Santa Maria Road.

This address correctly appears on the CSA/NSA listing on this website under the CSA/NSA tab at the top of this page.

We apologize for any confusion.

Alert LA County

Los Angeles County has implemented an emergency mass notification system that will be used to contact County residents and businesses via recorded phone messages, text messages or e-mail messages in case of emergency. The system, called Alert LA County, will be used by the County’s Emergency Operations Center to notify residents and businesses of emergencies or critical situations and provide information regarding necessary actions, such as evacuations. The system utilizes the telephone companies’ 911 database and is able to contact land-line telephone numbers, whether listed or unlisted. If the call is picked up by an answering machine, the system will leave a recorded message. If the number called is busy or does not answer, the system will redial the number in an attempt to deliver the message. The system is also TTY/TDD compatible.

Topanga Resident Access Card

The Topanga Resident Access Card is a personal identification card unique to Topanga, California. It is an official program of the Topanga Town Council and is supportd by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol. This card can be used in lieu of a California Driver’s License in disaster conditions for resident re-entry at Topanga roadblocks, and will only be accepted when officers deem it safe for residents to enter the canyon.

Topanga Exercise 2010

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!!

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, in cooperation with several public service agencies, county departments, and the Topanga Community, will be hosting Topanga Evacuation Exercise 2010.

This week-long event will feature Topanga Safety Week (April 26 through April 30, 2010), and will culminate with a canyon-wide evacuation exercise which will take place on Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

We encourage all Topanga residents to participate in both the Safety Week and the Evacuation Exercise. More details will be forthcoming. Keep checking back for more details. All materials pertaining to the Safety Week and the Exercise will be posted on the Topanga Exercise 2010 page of this website. Additionally, all Topanga residents will receive a packet in the mail. We anticipate that you should receive this mailing around April 19.

CSAs and NSAs – Important Information

Your Topanga Disaster Survival Guide contains a listing of all the Community Safety Areas (CSAs) and Neighborhood Survival Areas (NSAs); however, the listings in the book are the CSAs and NSAs that were in effect at publication time. The Los Angeles County Fire Department reviews this listing annually to make any appropriate changes.

Please visit the CSAs/NSAs page (tab located above) periodically to view the most current list of viable CSAs and NSAs, and make any necessary corrections to your copies of the Survival Guide.
