2012 “Ready, Set, Go” Topanga Evacuation Drill

March 29, 2012

The 2012 “Ready, Set, Go” Topanga Evacuation Drill will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This drill will be unlike previous drills in that we will actually be evacuating the Canyon, and we strongly encourage all residents to participate.

Detailed information regarding this drill will be mailed to all Topanga Residents during the week of April 16, but you can start planning your day now. As we begin to evacuate the Canyon on April 28, you will be asked to evacuate to a Red Cross Evacuation Center at either Taft High School or Palisades High School, where representatives will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Your time spent at the evacuation center will be minimal. We only ask that you take the time to check in and perhaps answer just a few questions for us.

Please ensure that you have registered all your points of contact with the ALERT LA mass notification system (www.alert.lacounty.gov), and on the day of the drill, keep your radio tuned to KNX 1070, where updated information and instructions will be broadcast during their traffic reports. You will also be able to get up-to-the-minute information and instructions by texting the word EVACUATION to 888777 from your cell phone (not case sensitive). You may opt into this feature at any time; you do not have to wait until April 28. Normal text message rates will apply, but messages will only be sent out during the drill on April 28 (more detailed information regarding this feature will be in the mailing packet you receive).

If you have horses, we encourage you to participate by practicing your horse evacuation plan: Drive your EMPTY horse trailer to Pierce College Equestrian Center, where representatives from LACDACCERT (Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care & Control Equine Response Team) will provide you with a practical demonstration of how a sheltering site works by taking you through the Equine Intake and Return to Owner Procedures and a tour of the site.

As in past years, Topanga Safety Week will take place April 23 through April 27, and we have some exciting activities lined up, which you will find in the mailing packet.

Please plan to participate in this drill. What you learn as a result could very well save your life when the REAL brush fire threatens your Canyon.

THANK YOU!
